Shared lineage
All four breeds are native Japanese spitz-type dogs, sharing traits such as intelligence, loyalty, alertness, and a strong independent nature. They are known for their clean habits, thick double coats, curled tails, and fox- or wolf-like appearance. These breeds generally bond closely with their families but can be reserved around strangers, making early socialisation and consistent training important.
Where they differ
The main differences lie in their size, purpose, and temperament. The American Akita is the largest and most protective, bred as a powerful guardian with a broad, bear-like head. The Japanese Akita (Akita Inu) is slightly smaller, more refined in appearance, and tends to be quieter and more reserved. The Shiba Inu is the smallest breed, known for its lively, confident personality and adaptability to various living environments. In contrast, the Shikoku Ken is a medium-sized, athletic hunting dog with higher energy levels and stronger prey drive, making it best suited to active owners who can provide regular exercise and mental stimulation.
