Origin

United States (developed from Japanese Akita bloodlines post-WWII).

Large — 60–65 cm at the shoulder, 32–59 kg.

Temperament

Composed, courageous, deeply loyal to family and reserved with strangers.

History

American servicemen brought Akita back from Japan after WWII. The breed diverged from its Japanese cousin, becoming heavier boned and broader in the head, prized as a steadfast household guardian. During the late 1800s, Akitas were crossed with breeds such as Mastiffs and German Shepherds to make them larger and stronger. After World War II, American soldiers stationed in Japan brought many of these larger Akitas back to the United States.

Care

Needs daily exercise, firm-yet-gentle training, and early socialization. A dense double coat sheds seasonally and benefits from weekly brushing.
